When make-up will no longer do

Pigmentation and sun damage can make you appear older than you are and using make-up to cover skin spots is not a long-term solution. If you want to reduce pigmentation, you need a combination of affordable treatments that reduce skin discolouration and reveal a younger-looking you,

Hyperpigmentation occurs when the skin produces more melanin, the pigment that gives skin its colour. This can make spots or patches of skin appear darker than surrounding areas. Hyperpigmentation is a common skin condition. It affects people of all skin types. Some forms of hyperpigmentation, including melasma and sunspots, are more likely to affect areas of skin that face sun exposure, including the face, arms, and legs.

A common cause of hyperpigmentation is an excess production of melanin. It is produced by skin cells called melanocytes. Several different conditions or factors can alter the production of melanin in your body.

  • Certain medications can cause hyperpigmentation.

  • Some chemotherapy drugs can cause hyperpigmentation as a side effect.

  • Pregnancy changes hormone levels and can affect melanin production in some women.

There are several types of hyperpigmentation, the common ones being melasma, sunspots, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

  •  Melasma is believed to be caused by hormonal changes and may develop during pregnancy. Areas of hyperpigmentation can appear on any area of the body, but they appear most commonly on the stomach and face.

  • Sunspots, also called liver spots or solar lentigines, sunspots are common. They’re related to excess sun exposure over time. Generally, they appear as spots on areas exposed to the sun, like the hands and face.

  • Post-inflammatory hyper pigmentation, this is a result of injury or inflammation to the skin. A common cause of this type is acne.

  • Erythema (redness), edema (swelling), scabbing, flaking, irritation or blistering in treatment area will most likely occur. This may persist for several days. A white-gray discoloration of the treatment area may appear immediately following treatment and last for a few minutes to a few days. Your pigmentation may darken, lighten, fade or even appear to have no change immediately post treatment. Laser pigmentation removal works by eliminating pigment in the surface of the skin through the body’s lymphatic system. Your pigmentation may darken, lighten, fade or even appear to have no change immediately post treatment. On average, it takes 4-6 weeks for your body to process the pigment. Multiple treatments may be necessary to achieve the desired results.

  • Discomfort may be relieved by taking an over the counter pain reliever or by using ice packs or cool compresses in 20-30 minute intervals.

  • Avoid sun exposure to the treatment area throughout the course of your laser treatments. If sun exposure is necessary, keep treatment area covered with a non-adherent bandage. Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight, and do not use UV tanning beds at all for four weeks after treatment.

  • Once per day use a gentle soap to cleanse treatment area and pat dry. To keep the treatment area moist, apply Vivescent Dermo Care or Sothys Repair Balm  twice per day for 7-10 days post treatment, or until the treatment area is healed.

  • If scabbing occurs, it is very important not to pick, shave, rub, scratch or aggressively wash the area to prevent possible scarring. If blistering occurs, do not drain blisters. Allow them to dry and heal on their own. Care should be taken to prevent trauma to the treated area for the first 7-10 days following treatment.

  • Physical exercise (aerobics, sport activities) should be discontinued for 1 to 2 days. Rough physical activities (playing football) should be discontinued for 10 days post treatment.

  • Return in 4-6 weeks for assessment.

The best success is usually achieved through a treatment plan that includes suppression and prevention, correction, and ongoing (lifelong) maintenance and management.

A consultation is recommended 48 hours before appointment. During the consultation, the medical aesthetician will examine the patient’s skin and specific areas of concern. The purpose of the consultation is to determine whether or not the patient is a good candidate for the treatment, or they would be better suited for an alternative rejuvenation treatment. Once it is verified that the patient is an ideal candidate, the practitioner will then design a personalized treatment plan specific to meet the patient’s individual needs. The exact amount of recommended treatments to obtain optimal results will be advised during the consultation. The provider will go over any preparatory treatment care plans as well as advise the patient on what to expect the day of treatment.
